Bird Monitoring

Bird Monitoring

Bird Monitoring

We are currently monitoring our owl boxes on our farms for young. We have already seen a successful number of eggs hatched and have started ringing the birds.

Ringing is a process which allows for data monitoring of bird species and their young. It entails attaching a small metal ring to the bird’s leg with a unique identification number. This means that the birds can be tracked throughout their life, giving us a better idea of their migratory patterns and lifestyles. This is carried out under a BTO licence.

We are not only discovering barn owls in our boxes, but a variety of different species including Little Owls, Kestrels and Tawny Owls. We have recently counted 46 kestrels, 25 barn owls, 1 peregrine and 1 tawny owl.

We will continue to monitor our boxes over the next couple of months and are excited to see what species they attract.

The Lincolnshire Show 2024

The Lincolnshire Show 19-20th June 2024

The show is fast approaching! It’s set to be a great day out for you and your families, and we are hoping for good weather.

Dyson Farming Ltd will be in the Countryside Area again this year for the 2-day event, and we have some exciting activities planned out. We will have a whole section dedicated to our preschool discovery zone, equipped with ride-on children’s tractors, sand pits, playhouses, a mini-AD plant, and Glasshouse. We also have educational activity sheets and games so the kids can have fun whilst they learn.

We will have a marquee serving refreshments and sweet treats, you’ll be able to try some of our strawberries too!

We will be joined by members of the James Dyson Foundation who are keen to discuss their educational resources and how they are helping the community.

Interested in joining Dyson Farming? We will have a stand dedicated to recruitment, so seize this opportunity to talk to a member of our team and take steps towards your future career.

We’re excited to be sponsoring the Schools’ Challenge again this year, designed to inspire children to gain a better understanding of agriculture and land-based activities. Please pop down and take a look at what creative ideas they have developed this year.

Restoring Natural Features- Dunston Beck

Restoring Natural Features-
Dunston Beck

The Dunston Beck restoration project has been pivotal in enhancing biodiversity by working with the natural environment.

Learn more about the what the project involves and our findings so far.

What is Dunston Beck?

Dunston Beck is one of several streams rising from Lincolnshire’s limestone bedrocks that are crucial to the local habitat. A steady flow of crystal-clear spring water, which emerges at ground level, makes a great habitat for diverse wildlife through wetlands, gravel beds and back channels.

What is the Dunston Beck Project?

Dyson Farming, collaborating with the Environment Agency and Wild Trout Trust, has undergone a major improvement, transforming the Dunston Beck to a more natural, meandering path, after previously being straightened for drainage. We have added in bends, seeded and planted locally sourced, native plants and carefully managed grazing ensuring a rich and diverse flora.

This project has been completed in two phases and was commenced in February 2021. We are continuously monitoring the site and are pleased with how it has withstood a variety of weather conditions such as flood management.

What are the findings so far?

We have seen benefits to wildlife, water quality and flow, enhancing biodiversity of the Beck and surrounding areas. The carefully excavated meanders help to filter sand and gravel on the riverbeds. These characteristics make it ideal for some of the most threatened species, including:

  • Water voles
  • European eels
  • Brown trout

Additional pools and riffles help to improve oxygen levels in low flow areas, offering consistent water temperatures for aquatic life.
